My 2-year-old daughter was holding a small bunch of grapes in her left hand and was trying to pull off one grape with her right hand. When she pulled with her right hand, she ended up with all but one of the grapes in her right hand, which she considered to be a failure. She tried again and the same thing happened. She was effectively pulling off single grapes with her left hand but because she was intent on doing it with her right hand, she didn’t notice that she was actually getting what she wanted—single grapes.
When you don’t get what you want, look at what you do get. It might be what you want.
