Today we were at the beach when an ice cream vendor rolled by with his cart. It was exciting because we weren’t expecting that and my kids love ice cream. As he rolled by and we asked him to stop, it struck me that there was a moment that arrived and we had only a moment to make a decision—ask him to stop or let him pass us by. If there had been an ice cream stand in a fixed location, it wouldn’t have felt the same. We would have had hours to decide. And maybe we wouldn’t have done anything.
Lots of life is more like the transient ice cream cart than the stationary ice cream shop. Perfectly good moments pass us by all the time. We don’t have all day to decide. We just think we do.
