Everything I Needed to Know about Business I Learned from Surfing (#10): You can’t control everything. You can always do something.

There are a lot of things you can’t control in surfing. If there are no waves, you can’t make there be waves. If the wind is coming in from the wrong direction, you can’t change it. I remember a surf report once given where the scout said, “Today is a good day to do something else.” Even though you can’t control everything, there are many things you can control. You can make sure you have the right equipment and are prepared for when the conditions are better for surfing.

The same is true in business. You can’t sell a fantastic Valentine’s Day product in November but you can start preparing for February. Use your down time wisely to prepare for the days when you’re making money hand over fist and running out of inventory. There is always something you can be doing to make your business better. The Beach Chalet in San Francisco was forced to close because of the COVID-19 pandemic and the owners took the opportunity to remodel their restaurant. It’s hard to close for 3 months when you have customers every day but easier to do during a temporary forced closure. I hope they come back even stronger.
